The History of Peace In Christ Lutheran Church
In 1989, several Missouri Synod pastors in the Duluth area became convinced that Hermantown was an ideal location for a new church start. The pastors brought their ideas to the Board of Missions of the Minnesota North District. Members of the Board were excited at the prospect of planting a mission church in Hermantown and made room for the project in their 1990 budget. In September of 1990, Rev. Timothy Ludwig accepted the call extended by the Minnesota District to be a church planter in Hermantown. Pastor Ludwig conducted door to door canvassing in Hermantown and began leading Bible studies in his home. During the summer of 1991, the Minnesota North District purchased a 19 acre new church site on Maple Grove Road for $30,000. Beginning in September of 1991, the Hermantown Lutheran Mission began holding Sunday services in the Boy Scout Headquarters building on Stebner Road. January of 1992 saw the members select "Peace In Christ" as the official name of the congregation. (The Sunday School children broke a tie vote.) On September 13th of 1992, the congregation formally joined the Missouri Synod. The Building Committee began working on plans for a church building in the spring of 1992. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the project were held on June 27, 1993. With the help of the Laborers For Christ, the facility was completed and dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 30, 1995. To date, God has blessed Peace In Christ with over three hundred members. By God's grace, Peace In Christ continues to grow both in numbers and in love for the Lord. Who would have thought that a handful of Christians meeting in a Boy Scout building would blossom into a thriving and vibrant church? God is wonderful! God is great! God is good, indeed! 5007 Maple Grove Road, Hermantown, Minnesota 55811 Telephone: 218-729-9473 pioffice@cpinternet.com
